It's been 3 yrs. since i've been in the states and a long time since i've posted here.every time i talk to someone back home makes me not want to ever go back.People getting killed every day, many of them over the stupidest issues.I hear The Pueblo has turned into a Colombian-Jamaican hangout were murder is an everyday thing.WHY DO WE STILL HAVE OPEN BORDERS?? Is this country in ten years gonna be called Costa Colomba? The economy is getting worse and letting in so many violent people doesn't help.So much changes in 10 yrs. I've gotten 2 DUI's since i've been here, you don't **** with da police like you do in good ol' Tiquisia...but i rather have it that way then live in fear.SAD TIMES IN COSTA RICA

Yeah mouth, it's getting bad here but not that bad that I want to leave yet.

Saying that, my wife just moved back to the US because she fears for her life here. Sad.

So in Costa Rica, drive around in a shitbox, stay broke, act REAL STUPID and say that you are Newbie666. People will believe you and you will be left alone.

You left at just the right time. Three years ago, right up until 9/11, was the high water mark for little CR, socially and especially economically. It is unbelievable how far downhill it has gone since then. The crime has gone absolutely wild. Corruption is widespread. And people are really hurting economically. The broke government has turned to looting businesses through taxes, fees, and "one-time emergency assessments" which seem to come up every 3 months. Stay away.

And quit drinking and driving.

And this trend will continue because the foreigners are bringing in all the money for the CR government to rob. This is the only thing keeping CR afloat at the moment. Haven't you noticed that the vast majority of businesses in CR are foreign owned?

On the other hand, a lot of money has left CR and will continue to leave as the Tico government continues to prove over and over that it can't and won't protect foreign investments (it's easier to steal them this way).

I wouldn't advise investing 5 cents in CR under the current conditions.

You also forgot to mention all the Venezuelens that are coming because of their president.

Costa Rica is now becoming extremely expensive. Having a car here is much more costlier than it is in the States. Not only that, but renting an apartment.

of course there is crime, i dont know a single country on the planet that doesnt have.

i love costa rica for its FINE qualitys and enjoy it very much, i actually have more fear IN NEW YORK where i was born and raised than i do here.

I live in the mountains near volcan irazu. its beautiful there and the ppl are great. the commute to san jose everyday sucks but i am used to it now. ive been doing now for about 2 years. i could spend the rest of my life here. im not sure if i will return to the states. my town has had very little crime that ive heard of and in this town word travels fast. but like pokerR said, every city has crime and you have to be careful anytime you are in a city.

im not too familiar with that place wolfie. if you are familiar with the road to volcan irazu, you might recall a fork in the road with a big statue of jesus. if you stay left that takes you to irazu, and if you stay to the right it takes you to my area in pacayas. i love when towns near by have festivals to celebrate san isidro( i think thats what it is) lots of partying with imperial, guaro, and the occasional swig of some local moonshine.

Come on people. What if we believed the Pat Buchanan's of the world and said foreigners were ruining the US and then found every way we could to keep them out. What an unbelievable disaster that would be to the US economy, despite what the small minority think. Countries that are able to attract lots of immigrants should be proud, it means you are doing something right. You know this all hit me during my last trip down to CR. I was walking down the street and saw a sign for a Western Union office I think it was, or maybe some other money sending service. Here was a sign and it said send money to a long list of countries. The obvious ones of Colombia and Central America, but also places like India and Cuba were on there, not exactly the places you first think about it being places for immigrants to a supposedly "third world" country. Now go to Mexico and you will NEVER see anything like that because while there are some immigrants there, it isn't exactly a big draw on the world map. Costa Rica has become a magnet of people whose dreams can't be fulfilled at home. It surely isn't the US, but it is a striking thing for a small country that most don't think of as being on the map for immigrants.

Now you can take it as a bad thing if you want because a small percentage of these immigrants are out to do bad things, or you can look at it positively and note that being a desirable place for immigrants is a step on the way to a better economy for a country. You acquire working people with skills that will contribute to the betterment of society. If you get beyond the rhetoric of a Buchanan you realize as a whole immigrants bring huge benefits. Not only do they pay more in taxes than they take out, but even better is they improve the ability of a country to do more than it could being just inward looking. So the next time you think that immigrants only bring bad things to CR, think again. And think you must be doing something right or else they would go elsewhere.

WB, while i agree with you in theory you have to understand that there is some truth to what is being said, that being said i think there are other things to be done other than denying an entire population from entering your borders, first would probably be to REALIZE that there is a problem that needs to be dealt with and get off the pura vida trip (law enforcement), that would be a good start although you do see the publica fuerze guys riding around on dirt bikes with uzi's strapped to the back and a 9mm to the waist, they (i believe) do their job well i just dont think there are enough of them or perhaps they need better leadership as an organization.

Again, the above comments are just my thoughts, I LOVE THIS PLACE, i would have a VERY HARD TIME MOVING BACK NORTH IF I EVER HAD TO.

costa rica is on planet earth and things happen, if it were more dangerous than any big city in the states i would not be here, thats for sure.

the thing is that its a small country with a small population, when one guy is killed the news travels far.

wana talk about crime, go to Bed Stuy in brooklyn ny, i grew up close by, i tell you folks, I WOULD NOT WALK THE STREETS THERE, IF I DRIVE THRU, I NOT ONLY HAVE THE WINDOWS CLOSED, DOORS LOCKED, IM DOING 90 TO GET OUT QUICK

i dont think i have ever been to any part of town that is as bad, when i am in my car, doors are locked, if i ever had a gun pulled on me for the car, i would simply get out, give the fella $10 for gas and let him keep it, my life is more valuable for a freakin car and im insured, that could happen in San Jose or LA

i have never had a gun pulled on me here in CR (4 years i have been here) but i had at least 5 occasions in NY where guns were pointed at me in road rage incidents.

SO ALL YOU HATERS (ie AMERICAN), SETTLE DOWN, THIS PLACE IS NICE, JUST REMEBER THAT NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE AND HOW NICE IT IS, HOW NICE THE PEOPLE ARE, B WIZE

again just my $0.02, its got some value as im basing this on 4 years living here full time
